So for 30 days, I meditated daily to see what benefits it would provide for my day-to-day outlook and my mental health overall.
Never would I have thought that meditation would become an important part of my week, but it really is quite incredible.
What I used
I know there are apps like Calm you can pay for to do daily meditation, but I wasn’t about to pay for something that I wasn’t even completely sold on.
I ended up hopping on YouTube and searching for “guided meditation” and alternated through videos based on what I wanted to feel that day.
I did this for 10-15 every day for 30 days, and if I had the time and needed some extra peacefulness now and again, I would meditate for 20-30 minutes.
These were the YouTube videos that I used the most frequently:
What exactly I did
I typically did my meditation in the morning right before I sit down to start my work day. If I didn’t do it in the morning, I would do it at the end of the day after I’m ready for bed or had a face mask on. #selfcare
After I decided which meditation I was going to do for the day, I sat upright on my couch with my legs crossed and closed my eyes and listened.
I preferred to listen with headphones because then you don’t hear your neighbors or what the hell your dog is doing in the next room.
After my meditation was over, I slowly opened my eyes and just sat there for a minute or two because you literally go to another place when you’re eyes are closed and you’re super focused on listening and breathing that if you stand up and start your day right away, it’s like you don’t get to soak in what you just did. That may sound weird or not make sense but oh well.
Then I got up stretched out my body and started my day.
How I felt during the month
The first week(ish) was annoying because it was a lot like practicing something you just cannot get the hang of.
It was hard for me to focus on my breathing and think the way the teachers told you to and I got frustrated.
After a little over a week into it I definitely found my footing and realized how relaxed I was after it.
It’s like sleeping while awake. Yes, I realize it doesn’t make sense but you become so relaxed while doing something to better yourself.
I started getting a sensation at the end when I would slowly open my eyes and just felt like I slept for 8 hours and was completely refreshed and excited for the day.
It’s freakin’ sorcery, guys.
After a couple of weeks of daily meditation, it became second nature to do it when I needed it instead of planning when to do it throughout the day.
How I felt mentally
After getting into meditation, I noticed a change in my outlook throughout the day.
I found myself more calm and open minded rather than easily getting panicky or turning my nose up if something didn’t fall into my daily routine.
It helped me “zen” out my mind and focus on myself first and if I did get stressed, I knew how to escape the stressful, anxious feeling and find my “inner bliss.” It sounds like such a sham but it’s TRUE!
Don’t knock it ’till you try it, honestly.
I definitely have found myself feeling lighter and more excited about the day and being productive because of how meditating helped shift my outlook.
Since I have finished my little “30-day trial” I’ve integrated it into my routine not on a daily basis, but like I said earlier, when I need it.
Every guided meditation you listen to will talk about how it is a practice of being mindful of yourself and your emotions and being present.
And it DEFINITELY is a practice. It takes a while to get the hang of what exactly your trying to achieve through meditation, but once you get the hang of it, it’s very peaceful and acts as self-care.
I highly recommend you try out some meditation throughout the week. Try one of those videos I shared, you will not regret it.
